What is an antioxidant
Vitamin C, selenium, coenzyme Q10 …

Occur naturally in our food, we also find these antioxidants as dietary supplements or cosmetics. Most of the cells are operating via chemical reactions. They produce energy by burning sugar, fats or proteins.

These chemical reactions proceed in the presence of oxygen and generate a form of waste. These wastes are called free radicals. It’s like rust accumulating within the cell. Over the time, these free radicals can cause cell damage including DNA.

The role of antioxidants is precisely to interfere against these attacks. They are found mainly in foods. Some, like vitamin C, track directly those free radicals. Others, such as selenium and coenzyme Q10 reinforce the action of antioxidant enzymes. As for polyphenols, they help to fight against the formation of free radicals.

A known health product
The first major users, Native Americans and Inuit of Labrador drink the infusion of tea mainly for its therapeutic properties. It would heal some respiratory disorders, digestive and kidney, rheumatism, scurvy and headaches. It would also use it as a blood purifier and facilitate childbirth.

Recent Quebec University studies have shown that the Labrador tea stem contains a compound that can fight against tumors in traditional medicine. In addition, another study conducted on the Aboriginal community of Cree, reveals that the extract of this plant would promote the fight against diabetes.

Tea is also used in the manufacture of cosmetics. Watch the video of Lise Watier.

Did you know?
Aronia berries are 172% higher in antioxidant levels than blueberries and 76% higher than cranberries !

Native of North America, these berries are very rustic and can withstand our temperatures down to -35°C.

From this rigor, these berries reap all its benefits. They are particularly rich in anthocyanins (antioxidants), vitaminse C, E, K, B and minerals such as potassium, iodine, magnesium ion, zinc and calcium. They also contain sorbitol, wich is especially important for diabetics.

A powerful antioxidant effect :
The Aronia fruit has about three times more antioxidants than blueberries, twice as blackberries and other fruit juices (see table above). Anthocyanins are flavonoids wich have the highest antioxidant capacity.

What antioxidants do :
– They neutralize free radicals that damage cells and DNA molecules
– They protect against cardiovascular diseases
– And fight skin damage caused by the sun

Aronia berry is therefore suitable for diabetics and those on a low carbohydrate diet because it fights against diabetes complications caused by the alteration of blood vessels. Moreover, Aronia juice would have positive properties on blood pressure and would be a stimulant for the immune system.

Tea against Cancer
Labrador tea has anti-tumor properties. It was discovered by researchers from laboratoire LASEVE, wich specializes in boreal pharmacopoeia. By Joel Leblanc, University of Quebec at Chicoutimi. (Cybersciences)

Laboratory analysis and separation of plant species (LASEVE) from the University of Quebec at Chicoutimi (UQAC) just added anti-tumor properties to this long list. Indeed, a study on rats shows the reduction of cancerous tumors after ingesting the Labrador tea infusion. It is being tested for the reduction of tumors and treatment of liver cancer, hepatitis, cirrhosis and ascites, prostate inflammation in combination with herbal treatments, stimulating thyroid function.

Beyond a super-fruit
According to the USDA (US Department of Agriculture) various research shows that Aronia berry’s antioxidant level is way much higher than the other super-fruits.

Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity or ORAC measures the antioxidant capacities of fruits and vegetables.

A survey by the USDA ORAC reported in 2010 that the berries of aronia are the locomotives, while other super berries are the wagons.

Indeed, Aronia berries are 172% higher in antioxidant levels than blueberries and 76% higher than cranberries.
